The extraordinary pace of health innovation and research over the past few decades has created unprecedented opportunities to improve healthcare services and health outcomes for the community. It is, by now, broadly accepted that research uptake is far more successful when key stakeholders are involved from the start in all facets of the translational process, whether they are health professionals, managers, policy makers or service users and members of the general public. The contribution of each and every one of these stakeholders is of significant importance when it comes to the translational research cycle. All of these stakeholders play a critical role in identifying gaps in knowledge that require the conduct of research to discover new knowledge and in translating that knowledge in ways that facilitate its eventual adoption in policy and practice. Through engaging key stakeholders in research proposal development; in the application of findings through clinical research and in the dissemination and implementation of evidence generated through clinical research, barriers and facilitators can be identified and addressed.
